With an altitude range from 1400ms to 3500ms, Alpe d'Huez offers guaranteed snow coverage from the first day of the season to the last. It's one of the best resorts for intermediate skiers in France, and with a snow park that is second to none, it's fabulous for boarders too. Lively apres-ski and plenty of shops, bars, and cafes, your time off the slopes can be well-spent. Like most purpose-built resorts, it is not really designed for non-skiers.

In its time, Avoriaz's architecture and traffic-free status lead the way of purpose-built ski resorts for decades to come. Now the centre of the Portes du Soleil area, it offers fantastic skiing right from your doorstep. Morzine, by contrast, is connected to Avoriaz by slopes and lifts but is a much more traditional Savoyarde village full of charm and character.

At the foot of Mont Blanc, Chamonix is a town with centuries' old traditions from the days of the early mountaineers looking to conquer the 'white giant'. It remains today a 'must ski' resort for intermediate and advanced skier, boarders, and ski tourers in the company of the town's renowned mountain guides. For beginners, we would recommend the neighbouring village of Les Houches.

Part of the famous 3-Valleys, Courchevel comprises of different resorts covering different levels each with their own distinctive style and atmosphere, but all with great shops, cafes, gourmet restaurants, and of course, direct access to amazing pistes for all levels.

Like Avoriaz, Flaine was one of the pioneering purpose-built resorts offering great skiing for beginners and intermediates. Les Carroz has a more traditional village atmosphere which makes it great for families.

France's most southerly ski resort is only 2 hours' drive from Nice and the beautiful Cote d'Azur, Isola 2000 offers a great range of slopes for beginners, intermediates and advanced skiers and boarders. As its name suggests, with the skiing starting at 2000ms, you are assured great snow conditions throughout the season, and if you want to, you can combine a visit with a couple of nights on the coast, or the exclusive enclave of Monaco is only a short distance away.

Made up of 5 inter-connecting areas, La Clusaz still maintains its Savoyarde village atmosphere. It is outstanding for beginners whether skiing or boarding, and intermediates will find an outstanding combination of cruisy pistes and challenging slopes. For advanced skiers and tourers with a guide, a day on Le Grand Bornand will test your nerve as well as your skills.

Now linked to the Les Arcs ski area, the different 'stations' which make up the La Plagne area offer skiers and boarders an incredible variety of slopes - many above the snow-line. Whilst never winning prizes for architectural beauty, nonetheless, this is a fantastic area which won't let you down.

Another resort that is set over different levels from 1300ms to 2000ms, the Arcs again offers amazing skiing and boarding opportunities, and for thrill-seekers a trip up to Arcs 2000ms is a must. The link to the La Plagne area brings an even bigger range of ski and boarding challenges.

With a 2000ms range from 1500ms to over 3500ms, Les Deux Alpes is another paradise for intermediates whether skiing or boarding. Lively apres-ski and doorstep access to the slopes combine to make this a resort not to be missed.

A real skiers and boarders resort, Les Menuires won't win any prizes in a beauty competition, but who cares when the skiing and boarding is this good. Part of the 3 Valleys area and predominantly above the snow-line, Les Menuires is hard-core and uncompromising.

Made up of 4 villages along the Guisane Valley, Serre Chevalier offers more than 250kms of pistes aimed primarily at intermediate and better skiers and boarders. You definitely shouldn't miss the piste Luc Alphand named after Serre Chevalier's most-famous son and Olympic Downhill skiing champion. Boarder or skier, this will set the pulse racing.

If you are looking for a resort designed by skiers and boarders for other skiers and boarders, then you have this in the sprawling resort of Tignes. Part of the incredible Espace Killy area, but only starting at 2100ms, you are guaranteed fantastic snow conditions season-round. Great nightlife complements your days on the slopes.

Sister village to Tignes, Val offers a startling array of skiing and boarding opportunities aimed primarily at intermediates and advanced. It's often said that if you look good skiing or boarding in Val, then you really are amongst the best holiday skiers. You can ski or board from morn til night, day after day without using the same piste more than once. Val has a legendary reputation for its nightlife, and is a regular stopping point for professional ski racers and boarders. Truly one of the world's greatest resorts.
